Dinosaur Iron Man Skeleton

Dinosaur
Iron Man
Skeleton

Last year Hoss was a bloody skeleton. Sprout was a dinosaur (if you scroll thru Oct '10 posts you can see them).

Sprout was determined to 'copy' big brother and be a skeleton this year. Then he said he wanted to be a ghost skeleton. I told him ghosts don't have bones. He said 'dinosaurs do'. Thus the birth of the dino skeleton, then he figured he would add to that and be a dinosaur iron man skeleton.

A hoodie. White felt and fabric glue = BAM! Costume.
I used blue glitter glue to add just a little something more to the bones. I sewed the skull, back bones and tail to the hoodie (you can easily just glue it all down).

Sorry the pics aren't all that, I took w/ my phone.

A Day Late...

When did Halloween become such a long Holiday?

I love Halloween as much as the next, but 3 day trick or treating and party after party after party = Oy Vey.

Here me and the boys are ready to trick or treat downtown (it's something they do here in small town USA - the downtown businesses get ready for the hoard of monsters, goblins and ghouls to take over; to fend them off they hand out crack.....I mean sugar a.k.a candy).

Hoss as the bloody skeleton w/ swirly face, Sprout the lil Dino or Monster and me as Confused - I'm a witch, I'm goth, I'm a clown, I'm a vampire victim, I'm a fairy = IDK. I was unique.

I pulled Hoss out of school a little early so we would hopefully miss the crowd of monsters (It worked! However, they did start coming out of the woodwork, hence 2 pictures).

An the final party of the weekend - well, we had a party to go to, but even with Mapquest we still got lost. Ended up doing a little trick or treating and then coming home to get ready to go to our neighbors party.

Hubs went as Hancock and I, the Vampire.

Oh Bloody 'ell

We had a couple Halloween parties to go to this past Saturday night.

I fully intended on going as 'can't decide' (clown outfit, witch hat, funky wig, fairy wings and vampire makeup)...I still have a couple days where I can go as that, and I might still.

Anyway, Saturday I changed my mind and was going to go as my default - a witch. Hubs saw the costume (a witch gown that ma made back in the 90s), said it was Gothic. He said I should go as a vampire (something I had never been).

I even went and got me fangs (Vampire fangs, fangtastics)- they were a waste of money. The denture adhesive didn't work well and the teeth broke (I exchanged them for another pair and those too broke).

Anyway, putting on my heavy makeup (I felt so pretty, I don't usually wear a lot of makeup).

The purpose of this blog:

If I was going as a vampire I was going to do it right and have blood staining my mouth.

I didn't want to use blood red makeup, I wanted it to run and look as if I had just fed. I used KoolAid to make the blood. About 1/4 tsp KoolAid powder and a couple drops water. I used a toothpick to have it run from my mouth - I thought it was cool looking (hubs thought the blood was a little much - really?!?).

What I learned --- KoolAid stings when on the skin (makes you wonder what it does to your insides if it stings the skin), tastes good though and the real lesson...it stains! 2 days later and I still have blood stains around my mouth.

Sweats = Costume

I love to use regular ol' sweats and transform them into a costume, it helps that they are cheap.

I free handed all this with fabric paint (minus the heart that is made out of felt, check another post, Sept '10).

No, it isn't perfect and Yes, that is bothering me (I'm a perfectionist when it comes to creativity).

I took strips of white felt to cover the front part of the ribs (kind of a 3D look).

Hoss wanted to be bloody (I guess it's his age...7 yrs). I added waaay more blood than I thought I would (was completely against blood and gore).

I LOVE how the shirt came out!
Unfortunately, he wont be able to wear it to school, but around town will be ok.

Dino/Monster Costume

Felt = Details.

Spots and teeth - not cut to be perfect.

I chose 2 shirts of the same size and color (4T). For Sprouts costume I needed a hoodie - I looked and looked and could not find a blank hoodie - so I had to make one!

Here is where I made my mistake (yes, I will admit to a mistake). See the shirt on the right all cut up? Rather than cutting the neck straight across I angled it (WHY?) *I used the finished seam on the bottom to be the face opening of the hoodie.

Had I not angled the cut it would fit perfect, but now if the hoodie is on the head like it should be (pulled forward), the back neck is pulled up. I will just put the hoodie on with a loose fit.

Sewing the hood together, with the 3 triangular back pieces (what are those called?)

Attaching the hood to the shirt.

Since it is not Halloween I will allow only blurry images of the semi finished costume (the tail will be pinned on).

Using fabric glue (Aleene's Fabric Fusion), I put the spots, teeth, nostrils and eyes on.

*Heart*

A human heart made out of felt and hand stitched. It's part of Hoss' costume.

Halloween Costumes

I always start thinking about Halloween in August.

I am one of the rare ones that still makes costumes. My mom made costumes for me and my brother and it is something I enjoy doing for my kids.

So, I start asking the kids what they want to be for Halloween in August, I ask Hubs too. That gives me 3 months to figure out how I am going to go about making the costume.

At first Hoss said he wanted to be a spider (he knows I am terrified of the eight legged freaks). Sprout wanted to go as a bird or a dog, we were going to go with a bird dog. Then everything changed (I am not one for change).

Hoss then said he wanted to be a big, scary, black cat....Ok, I can do a black panther.

Sprout told me last week that he wanted to be a dog, a cat, a bird, a train, a monster truck and bus....HowDoI? WhereDoI???

Took them to the Halloween store to get 'ideas'. What a big help that was *sarcasm*.

I can only assume - Hoss has now started saying that he wants to be something scary, oozing with blood and guts (WHERE does he get this? We are very careful on what he can watch). So, I can only assume he is getting these ideas from school (2nd grade).

He is bound and determined to be something scary...I asked him the other day and he said 'fine, I'll be a skeleton...since there is nothing else'. I said 'nothing else? I can make you into a princess if you want'.

Anyway - I went out today and got the makings for the costumes. Hoss main part is black sweats $10 and Sprout is also a long sleeve and pants $3.50 each...I bought an extra shirt to make a hoodie for his shirt.

Hubs is going to find his own thing. He will wait til the last minute (Halloween party is Oct 16).

My costume, on the other hand, is pretty much complete. I am so excited about this costume. The main body of it, is a costume my mom made back in the 80's (I try to keep all the costumes, although there are several that got lost over the years).
